The cuttlefish is related to squid. In jewelry the bone from cuttlefish can be used for casting. One side of the bone is very soft making it easy to carve. Something particular to casting with cuttlefish is the texture-the cuttlefish bone grows in layers that resemble wood grain, topographic maps, or enlarged finger prints which makes each casting truly one-of-a-kind.
